And change the coolant as listed in owners manual. And you have to make sure cooling system is air tight. There were issues with a few engines that needed some new design gaskets. Your article and the discussion of problems is very old news. Peak Global Lifetime is the same coolant minus that chemical. Https:/ / news04/ 2006/ 08/ gm_dexcool.htmlĭexcool contains an aggressive plasticizer chemical. GM has been having problems with Dexcool since they started using it in 1996. Lets say you keep cruising with Dexcool mysterious problems will happen like a leak in the radiator.a leak in the coolant reservoir.etc. Pepboys seems best equipped around here to perform these fluid flushes. The best thing you can do is get the "Dexcool" coolant flushed and replaced with Peak Global Lifetime. Im in the livery ed to own a Suburban.know a lot of people with these vehicles. The system is still clean all round with zero issues at 135,000 miles, which is stil less than half that of the Avalanche. I flushed out the factory coolant on the Envoy when I replaced the factory thermostat at 56,000 miles and again when I replaced the water pump at 115,000 miles. I no longer have the Avalanche, but I personally know the person who now has it with 293,000 miles now and he's got no issues with it either. thermostat or water pump, the system was thoroughly flushed and back flushed and refilled with premixed Dexcool. Whenever a cooling system repair was performed, e.g. The LM7 5.3L I had on an old Avalanche didn't cause me any grief, nether did the LL8 4.2L in my Envoy, both of which have been running Dexcool since they left the factory. I, personally, have never had a problem with Dexcool. Newer gasket material, primarily HNBR with aluminum frames addressed the problem, but until that point both GM and some aftermarket manufacturers were paying for warranty claims. The plastic would soften, swell and eventually leak. The root cause was air in the system, which caused acid to form when mixed with the coolant and attacked plastic carrier gaskets. By the early 2000s, manifold gasket failures on the 3.1L/3.4L as well as 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.7L using plastic carrier gaskets with moulded silicone was common. Unless the chemicals have changed, then I think there is a good possibility that gaskets can be damaged over the long term on older GM cars.Back in '96, GM made the "mistake" of calling Dexcool a "lifetime" coolant. I have not yet found any factual data that leads me to believe that Peak or Prestone long life, and the other Dexcool clones are compatible with older gasket materials. I am sure Dexcool is a fine coolant and all that jazz now just as long as the gasket material is compatible. I hope you do understand that there was a lot of people that had a lot of trouble with Dexcool and cheap GM gaskets. I'm just going to drain & fill the system every 2 yrs to be on the safe side but I'm not worried. Would a spec'd Asian coolant be better, of course. I ended up using *gasp* Peak LL - or in your words - a "Dexcool clone." Did my car explode, no. I then needed full concentrate coolant to not disturb the ratio but couldn't source any Asian coolant or Peak Global that came like that. When I changed the radiator in my Infiniti, I flushed out the system using distilled water. What I am saying is claims of all makes and models is hog wash for Dexcool clones unless it has chemically changed to not damage what ever gasket is installed especially for GM models 1995 and older. I just don't understand how Super Tech can claim all makes and models unless Dexcool has chemcially changed.īefore the Dexcool train starts rolling, I am not saying that Dexcool is bad now. I know it was just a combination of cheap lower intake gaskets and Dexcool. I went through the Deathcool headache on my 98 Malibu. What makes me mad is advertising that Super Tech is compatible with all makes and models with a complete flush is plain just false. I did a complete flush, and put some Peak green conventional in it which is what it is spec for anyway. Nothing I could find written on the jug said that it was Dexcool. I put it in my 1992 Cutlass Supreme, and about a week later I got thinking that the Super Tech is really a Dexcool clone. The Super Tech claims to be compatible with all other antifreeze for top offs, and for all makes and models if a full flush is done. Went to Walmart to get some antifreeze, and all they had was the Prestone and Super Tech 5 years/150,000, and the Prestone Dexcool.
